Cytogenetic Study of Amniotic Fluid

Cytogenetic analysis of amniotic fluid is a powerful tool to detect fetal chromosomal aberrations. The best time for collection of sample is between 15 and 17 weeks of gestation. Samples withdrawn earlier or later usually require long culture time.

For Ethical and religious causes, we don't carry any study leading to abortion especially if this is beyond the 17th week (120 days of gestation). "This has been declared as  a forbidden procedure by the Islamic and Christian boards in Egypt."

However, some of the amniotic fluid analyses may be requested to take adequate obstetric precautions or to give therapy as in cases with adrenogenital hyperplasia  syndrome.

Common Indications of amniocentesis

bulletPregnant women above 35 years
bulletHistory of previous children with chromosomal aberration
bulletHistory of a parent who is carrier of balanced chromosome aberration
bulletSex linked chromosome abnormalities
bulletAbnormal findings during fetal ultrasound examination.
