ROUTINE CHROMOSOME ANALYSIS,  BLOOD

    This study includes examination of banded karyotype, with analysis of 10-20 metaphases (G-banding). Other techniques of banding may be used when required.  Other cytogenetic studies or  FISH studies may be done using the same sample.

Common Indications of routine cytogenetic study :

1. Cases with congenital malformations.
2. Cases with mental retardation and abnormal somatic features.
3. Couples with repeated fetal loss (both parents should have the test).
4. Couples and Cases with family history of chromosomal abnormalities. 
5. Females with short stature (suspected Turner).
6. Cases with infertility.
7. Cases with ambiguous genitalia or other "gender crisis" 

Through our Lab service you insure :

Specimen :

3- 5 ml of  peripheral blood are drawn in green-top vacutainer (Sod heparin tubes) or heparinized syringe.  Invert several times to mix and send in room temperature. DO NOT freeze or expose to direct sunlight.

Average report time: 

Results are usually available within 3-5 work-days .  Few cases, may require longer time, espcially, if non routine techniques are required. Results are optionally revealed to patient or caring physician. Abnormal results will be reported to the referring physician.
