This study is done to exclude the presence of two or more cell lines in the examined individual. This may happen due to a
post-zygotic event leading to one or more abnormal cell lines or due to fusion of
more than one zygote leading to a chimera ...
To exclude mosaicism 50-100 cells are examined, counted
and visually karyotyped besides the routine number of photographed metaphases
and karyotype.
Indication :
Strong suspect of certain chromosomal aberration with normal routine
study.
Syndromes where mosaic cell
lines are common e.g. Turner syndrome, Trisomy 8, etc....
