This  is done through culture of monolayer  of cells (usually fibroblasts) that grow out  of the sampled tissue.  In contrast to lymphocytes which are stimulated to divide within few days, most tissue cultures require around 2-3 weeks to get adequate number of metaphases. Exception of this, are bone marrow, gonads and chorion villi samples (CVS).

Common Indications:

bulletCytogenetic study of products of conception in cases abortion or stillbirths.
bulletStudy of somatic mosaicism not involving hematological cell lines.
bulletStudy of chromosome fragility of fibroblasts in some chromosome fragility syndromes.

Report time :

                Usually 2 to 3 weeks
