Reviews of Literature

June,31,2001 -- The following is a brief list of the most recent publications that came to our attention during the last months.  To read  the topics or their abstracts, just click the underlined link

Cell proliferation and protein synthesis as initial factors in determination of axial polarity - Development Growth & Differentiation
The rate of cell proliferation relative to that of protein synthesis appears to have an initial role in establishment of axial polarities in developing animal embryos. An increase in this ratio leads to anterior or dorsal differentiation, while reduction allows posterior or ventral differentiation in a number of organisms. The role that various growth factors play in the regulation of proliferation and protein synthesis is examined...

Foot problems in Turner's syndrome - Journal of Pediatrics
In a randomized, prospective study, data were collected on 23 girls with Turner's syndrome (TS) and an age- and sex-matched control group of 47 girls in order to document foot problems and to establish their cause. History revealed that 6 (26%) girls with TS had problems with ingrowing toenails compared with none of the control subjects. Compared with the control subjects, girls with TS showed a significantly increased incidence of short, broad feet; hyperextension of the great toes at the interphalangeal joint; toe nail involution; inflammation of the periungual tissues; and intermittent lymphedema...

Incidence of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) mutations among children of Mediterranean extraction with functional abdominal pain - Journal of Pediatrics
Of 59 Sephardic Jewish and Arab children in whom functional abdominal pain was diagnosed, we found that 20% were homozygote for the familial Mediterranean fever gene. Inclusion of genetic screening for familial Mediterranean fever may be advisable in the investigation of recurrent abdominal pain among children of Mediterranean extraction...

Ethical Issues With Genetic Testing in Pediatrics - Pediatrics
Advances in genetic research promise great strides in the diagnosis and treatment of many childhood diseases. However, emerging genetic technology often enables testing and screening before the development of definitive treatment or preventive measures. In these circumstances, careful consideration must be given to testing and screening of children to ensure that use of this technology promotes the best interest of the child...

Human Molecular Embryogenesis: An Overview - Pediatric and Developmental Pathology
Molecular embryology is a rapidly evolving field of great complexity. This overview is primarily for the newcomer to this field, in an attempt to demystify the processes by which a human single-celled zygote eventually forms an embryo...

Feasibility of Collecting Buccal Cell DNA by Mail in a Cohort Study - Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention
This study demonstrates under field conditions that it is possible, using a mail mouthwash protocol, to obtain genomic DNA adequate for PCR-RFLP-based genotyping from a large number of individuals participating in a multiethnic cohort study. It also shows that it is possible to almost double the amount of DNA collected by requesting two samples instead of one, without affecting the response rate...

AAP Statement on Molecular Genetic Testing in Children - American Family Physician
The Committee on Genetics of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a position statement on molecular genetic testing in pediatric patients. The AAP statement appears in the December 2000 issue of Pediatrics. For decades, many types of diagnostic and carrier testing for genetic disorders have been available, but the use of molecular methods is a relatively recent phenomenon...

Whole Genome Amplification Increases the Efficiency and Validity of Buccal Cell Genotyping in Pediatric Populations - Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention
Conclusion: Of the several protocols available for collecting buccal cells, we reasoned that an interviewer-collected cytobrush method would be superior to a mouth rinse for our study of childhood leukemia. Mouthwash typically contains alcohol, and the possibility of swallowing or aspirating these solutions poses a hazard to young subjects and is contraindicated...

Collection of Genomic DNA from Adults in Epidemiological Studies by Buccal Cytobrush and Mouthwash - Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention
We have shown that a single self-collected 10-ml Scope mouthwash sample (14.3 wt% alcohol) sent by mail at room temperature provides substantially larger amounts of human genomic DNA than two self-collected cytobrush samples sent by mail at room temperature without a transport medium. Although most (>93%) of the mouthwash phenol-chloroform DNA extracts and only 60% of the cytobrush phenol-chloroform DNA extracts contained high molecular weight DNA (>23 kb), all extracts by either method were adequate for a wide range of PCR-based assays
